A native Philadelphian, Steve founded the Monarchs in 1995 after several years of volunteering at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center. The program quickly became regarded as one of the top youth sports programs in Philadelphia, producing athletes who are as well prepared academically as they are athletically. Steve's passion, commitment, attention to detail and desire to innovate have earned him a reputation as one of the top youth sports coaches in America. Steve is the proud father of two children, and lives with his wife and family in Philadelphia.
John has dedicated his life to serving young people. A Philadelphia native, he attended Penn State University before returning home to work with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. John has created and managed sports teams and leagues at recreation centers in some of Philadelphia’s most underserved neighborhoods. He has coached with the Monarchs for over 20 years and also serves on the coaching staff of the Phillies RBI All-Star team, helping guide them to RBI World Series Championships in 2007 and 2017. John is regarded as the trivia master of the Monarchs coaching staff, though we sometimes think he might just be making stuff up.
A West Philly native, Tasheed brings a wealth of knowledge to the Monarchs from his time as a Division 1 and professional basketball player. Tasheed is a graduate of St. Joseph's University, where he was a team captain and starting point guard. He is acknowledged as one of the premiere trainers in the Philadelphia area and has the rare ability to connect with and teach young people of all ages and skill levels. More than his basketball expertise, though, Tasheed’s desire to be a mentor and role model to the young people he serves is what makes him a great fit for the Monarchs program. In the rare moments when he's not coaching, he's giving back to his hometown through his "Born Leader Family" initiative.
Curt is a Philadelphia native who serves multiple roles with the Monarchs. In addition to coaching two age groups, Curt has served on the Philadelphia Youth Organization Board of Directors and the Anderson Monarchs Strategic Planning Committee. Curt is a founder and co-director of United Philly Soccer and is also a member of the Up2Us Coaches Training program. Curt first discovered the Monarchs through his children, who have been active participants in the program since 2013. When he’s not driving a car-load of kids to Monarch's games, you can find Curt mentoring youth, going to the gym, cooking or spending time with family. He lives in the Germantown section of Philadelphia with his wife and children.
Amos began volunteering as a coach with the Monarchs in 2007. After a stint with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation he served as the Executive Director of the Lenfest Center from 2011-2017. In 2017 he was hired as the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Youth Organization, the non-profit that provides funding and governance for the Monarchs. A DC native, Amos lives in South Philadelphia with his wife and two daughters. He is slowly coming to grips with the fact that his children are going to be Eagles fans.
“Coach Ike” is a South Philly legend. His basketball acumen is matched only by his commitment to children. He has positively influenced hundreds of lives during his years as a coach, league administrator, mentor and father figure. Ike has coached baseball and basketball with the Monarchs for over 15 years, and currently coaches our 15U baseball and basketball teams. He also helps manage our developmental basketball leagues and provides clinics and camps for players of all ages. Ike and his wife Liz are the proud parents of two Monarchs, Demetrius and Darius.
Gabe is a South Philly native who grew up playing basketball and baseball with the Monarchs. After graduating from the Friends Select School he spent a year teaching English in Ecuador. He’s currently enrolled in the Honors Program at the Community College of Philadelphia. Gabe is a member of the Up2Us Coaches Training program and is working with Monarchs teams and programs from ages 5-13. Gabe is fluent in Spanish, is a certified life-guard, and is moderately informed about trends in crypto-currency. Gabe is also one of South Philadelphia’s premier dog walkers, cat feeders, plant waterers and baby sitters.
Alex Wilson is a life-long Monarch. Born and raised just blocks from Marian Anderson Recreation Center, Alex played soccer, basketball and baseball with the Monarchs, and attended high school at Germantown Academy. After graduating he played baseball at Franklin & Marshall College while earning his degree. Alex works primarily with our 10- and 11-year-old Monarchs teams, coaching them in baseball and basketball. He is known for his patience, his ability to engage meaningfully with each child on his teams, and his commitment to individual and team development. Alex lives in South Philly and is a Recreation Leader with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. He can tell you where to find the best vegan cheesesteak in town.
